Nursing course

The Princess Máxima Center Academy, in collaboration with the UMC Utrecht Academy, offers a follow-on course to become a pediatric oncology nurse. This course supports the development of competencies and skills that are needed in pediatric oncology care.

Target group

The follow-on course in Pediatric oncology nurse primarily focuses on nurses who have completed a pediatric supplementary course. In consultation with the course trainer, this course is also open to oncology nurses, mbo-hbo-level nurses and other professionals. The option is available to customize a learning package with the theoretical modules, specifically for them.

You work at least 24 hours per week in a pediatric oncology center, the Princess Máxima Center, a shared care hospital or in home care. The course is for BIG-registered nurses [Individual Healthcare Professions Act] who have a learning agreement for traineeships where practical learning objectives and attainment levels can be achieved. Theory is combined with practical learning in your workplace. Traineeship(s) in a pediatric oncology center are a required part of the course.

Content

The follow-on course Pediatric oncology nurse includes modules in hemato-oncology, neuro-oncology and solid tumors. Additionally, there is course content in curative care, supportive care and palliative care. This course provides the necessary information and skills to attendees enabling them to provide the best level of care and support ti children with an oncological disorder and their families. By means of clinical reasoning and applying developmental care, the skills are taught to properly assess situations and to reason which care is most suitable at that time.

The course consists of a theoretical part in the form of 6 modules, each lasting 3 days, and a practical part totaling 1200 hours. The practical part includes at least 260 hours of internship in a pediatric oncology center.
